Obesity and Periodontal Disease (Periodontitis)

Obesity is considered to be low grade systemic inflammation. Fat cells release cytokines similar to those in periodontal disease. These cytokines both directly cause tissue damage and regulate other chemicals that activate body defense mechanisms which cause inflammation.
